NASA seeks new technology for power, oxygen and construction on the Moon

NASA is asking for proposals to develop technologies needed for exploration and infrastructure near the Moon’s south pole. The solicitation was announced September 8.

The programme includes solar power systems, extracting oxygen from lunar soil, radioisotope power, advanced manufacturing in space and nanomaterials production. NASA says these capabilities could reduce dependence on supplies sent from Earth.

The competition is intended for industry, academic institutions and nonprofit organisations, with international partners able to participate through U.S.-led teams.

This is a request for technology proposals, not an announcement that a lunar base is operating. The agency says technical findings and demonstration results could help inform future purchasing decisions.
